Reviews From The Crypt – Runaway

This week ECHG writer Adam Holtzapfel takes a look at the 1984 cult classic Runaway.

The 1980’s were a time where sci fi/horror hybrids were a thing. Think films like Terminator, Aliens, Predator, Chopping Mall, and more were a hit in theaters and home video. It was on one random day on HBO that I came across Runaway, an under the radar film starring Tom Selleck, Cynthia Rhodes, and Gene Simmons.

Written and directed by Michael Crichton (yes, of Jurassic Park fame). Tells the story of Jack Ramsey (Selleck), a police officer who specializes in malfunctioning robots. Upon finding a robot programmed to kill, he and his partner Thompson (Rhodes) end up in a tangled web set up by Luther (Simmons).

Thompson (Rhodes) and Ramsey (Selleck) are on the hunt.

While Runaway may not have aged as well as some of it’s contemporaries, this is still a film not to be overlooked. The story keeps viewers intrigued on what Luther’s end game is. Selleck with his trademark mustache delivers a strong performance as does Simmons. Great FX and directing by Crichton make this a fan favorite.

If you’re a fan of any of the films listed above and don’t have this on your shelf, you’re doing yourself a disservice.
